Tumbleweed Flats RPG #5

* * *

A Texas sun bore down upon the flat land as 200 long wild-eyed mustangs pushed across the desolate plains. There was no wind and the dust the animals kicked up seemed to hang in the air. The hands called and whistled sharply through their bandanas, choking on the dust all the same.

Jamie Ebony-Lee Williams reined in her gray dappled mare and swung about, heading for the chuck wagon on the outskirts of the herd. Pulling down her red handkerchief from around her face, she reached for the ladle in water barrel, strapped to the side of the wagon. Taking a long swallow, she let the cool water slide down her parched throat. She sighed, contented and wiped the water from her mouth.

When she looked up, rubbing the sweat from her neck, she noticed that far into the distance some few scattered buildings had risen from the dust and heatwaves and stood out against the prairie. Tumbleweed Flats, she thought and, wiping her bandana around her face again, went to join the herd and spread the good news!

Marie Williams, Jamie's younger sister, riding a dark appaloosa mare named Promise, quickly moved into a canter to head off the wandering mustang before it got too far. The animal was back in the herd quickly, and as Marie looked up, she saw her sister approaching. Smiling she waved and pulled Promise to a stop as Jamie rode up beside her.

"Did you see it?" Jamie asked excitedly.
"See what?" Marie wondered.
Jamie turned her pony's head and pointed off in the distance.
"Oh!" Even under the bandana concealing her face, Jamie could tell her younger sister was happy.
"We're finally home!" Jamie said.
"Almost!" Marie replied.

Ellen Atwater leaned out the window of the stage as it rolled into the town. "Tumbleweed Flats," she said aloud.  "I can't believe I'm here."

"Did ya say somethin', ma'am?" asked a voice from behind her.

Conscious suddenly of her undignified posture, Ellen pulled her head back into the stage and forced herself to sit back against the seat. "I was just thinking out loud," she explained to the rancher across from her -- and had to smother a nervous giggle at the look on his face.

"Whoa, boys!" shouted the driver from on top, as the stage jerked to a stop.

Ellen grabbed quickly for the black bag sitting next to her. Her eyes lingered for a split second on the gold lettering on the dark leather.  E. M. Atwater, M.D.

M.D.  How long she had worked for those initials.  How long she had dreamed of this day.  Since – way back when her mother had been traveling to California to visit her husband...and the letter had come back saying she had died of a fever since there was no doctor available.

Ellen's grip tightened on the handle of the medical bag, as the driver threw open the dusty doors of the stage.  He didn't offer his hand but she didn't notice.  Taking a deep breath, she stepped down out of the stage – and onto the hard-packed dirt of her new home.

“These your bags, miss?” the driver asked from behind, pulling two carpetbags off the top of the stage.  Ellen nodded and, tucking her medical bag under on arm, picked them up.

“Thank you,” she said quickly.  “Do you happen to know if there's a boarding house in town?”

“Nope, but th' hotel's down the street.  They'll give ya lower rates iff'n ya plan to stay fer a while.”

“Thanks,” Ellen said again, and started to make her way down the street.  Her blue eyes squinted slightly against the strong Western sun, she took in everything that was going on – the cowboys trotting down the street, a wagon with a young ranching couple in it moving slowly up – the curious looks she was getting from the loafers leaning back on the boardwalk.

Her steps slowed as she saw the sign on the big false-front building across the street.

“That must be the hotel,” she said to herself.  Dodging  a wagon heading up the street, she hurried towards the door of the hotel.

“It is not for us to decide in which time we were born. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Tyrel Berg, tall, dark, his somber brown eyes overshadowed by the wide brim of stetson. He watched the herd with herd with concentration, watching the movement of each horse with particular interest.

They were a fine bunch of animals and they would sell well, Ty was sure. He galloped his pinto stallion, Diablo alongside a tall black mare and noted her eye turning back to watch him closely. His smile was small, but a glad one. He'd been watching this one all day and his questions had been answered.

"Ty!" The seventeen year old looked through the dust and saw Jamie and Marie racing toward him. He saw their excitement and looked ahead. There was Tumbleweed Flats, growing steadily nearer.

Marie reined in Promise beside Ty's horse. Jamie fell in on the other side.
"Almost home," Marie said to herself with a contented smile. Promise trotted easily along side the herd. The town buildings came closer and closer as they neared town. Marie's and Jamie's father rode up beside them. Smiling he said

"You girls go ahead into town, and then come out to the ranch once you've done there, all right?"

Marie and Jamie nodded in excitement. With a quick wave to Ty, they spurred their horses into a canter as they headed towards town.

"Uh, Ty," Mr. Williams said after the girls had raced on ahead. "What do you think of that black mare yonder?"

Ty looked at him, surprised. "Why sir, I'm just the stable boy!"
"I know! But I'd like your opinion! If I knew your father, and I'm sure I did, he didn't die leaving you with no knowledge of horse flesh at all!"
Ty smiled, a little embarrassed Mr. Williams had caught him watching the herd so eagerly!

Jamie whooped and hollered as they raced for the town, her long brown hair blowing in the wind. Marie laughed at her sister and knew they were going to be a sight when they rode into town. But somehow it just didn't matter today!

They slowed when the got to the town and rode toward the hotel where Aunt Beatrice was surely to be waiting. She'd arrived a few weeks before on the stage from St. Louis.

Skirts swishing about as she swung down off Promise, Marie tied the reins loosely to the hitching rail and joined her sister as they walked into the cool lobby of the hotel, eagerly searching for they're aunt.

Jamie noticed that the hotel clerk eyed their dusty clothes and dirty faces disapprovingly, but walked up to him anyway. "Excuse me, but you happen to have a Miss Beatrice Beldon on your list?"

The clerk lifted an eyebrow. "I'm sorry miss, but we do not give out personal information of that sort about our customers anymore!"

Jamie's brows shot up and she was about to make a retort when Marie stepped in. "It's alright, sir, she's our aunt. She's tall, with-" She was interuppted abruptly when someone spoke behind them.

"Jamie and Marie Williams! How on earth do you expect to get any information of any kind out of that gentleman looking like that?"
The two girls whirled around. It was Aunt Beatrice!

Marie's words died in her mouth. She tried to stammer a reply but the sight of her aunt, but no words would come. She looked at Jamie just as their aunt continued.
"Well, what is your reason for appearing like this?"
Jamie straightened and said "We just arrived in town, Aunt, and Father said we could come pick you up and take you to the ranch."
"And just how, may I ask, am I to travel?  Not on horseback, I presume."

"Oh, aunty!" Jamie ran into her arms and enclosed her in a hug. "Papa knew you would never want to ride a horse, so he's sending the chuck wagon into town, too. We more supplies before we begin setting up house!"

Marie nodded. "We've compiled a list of things we'll need, too." She took a piece of paper from her pocket and Aunt Beatrice looked over with a raised eyebrow.
"Very well done, young ladies," she said happily, but then her smile faded. "But I see you've forgotten one important thing on this list."
Jamie's expression fell. "What aunty?"
"Bolts of fabric so I may make you dresses!" Aunt Beatrice smiled pleasingly.
"Dresses?" the sisters said together in a horrified tone and looked at eachother in dred.

"But, but Aunty," Marie protested. "We don't need dresses!"
Aunt Beatrice skeptically took in the girls attire. Her gaze swept over Jamie's pants and checkered shirt, and then onto Marie's dusty skirt and shirt.
"Well," she said after her appraisel was done, "you Marie certainly could stand for another dress or two-considering from what I saw when I was at your place before you moved, you wore pants more than anything. And Jamie needs dresses. It's not fitting for girls like you to be going about in pants."

Jamie sagged and looked at Marie again. "But aunty, we're not like the other girls around here! We live on a ranch and a horse ranch to boot! And don't you think it would rather difficult training horses in-"
"Oh, I have no objections to you wearing what you prefer around home and while working with those wild animals, but I can assure you, ladies, you will not be arriving in this town again looking like that!"
Jamie sighed and knew it was no use trying to change Aunt Beatrice's mind. Marie and Jamie both knew they were going to have a very interesting time with their aunt running things!

Marie and Jamie shared a look.
"Now, you ladies go on ahead and pick up the supplies, then meet me back here, all right?" Aunt Beatrice said.
"Okay," Marie agreed. She and Jamie headed out the door.

"I hope aunty doesn't have us going around in tight, high collars and plain brown dresses!" Jamie commented to Marie as the walked across the street to the general store.
Marie nodded and hid a sigh as they met the cook, Old Chug, just going inside.
"Well, girls!" he said cheerfully, then saw their sullen faces. Raising a gray, grizzled brow, he said dryly, "I see you met your aunt, huh?"

"Yeah," Marie said as they joined him on the porch. "And she is just as stern as before. She wants us in dresses."
Old Chug looked skeptical. "Why would she want to do that? You two looked down right pretty in whatever you're wearin'."
"Thank Chug," Jamie said, smiling a little.

The desk clerk assigned Ellen to a room and once inside, she closed the door and took a second to orient herself.

She noted with appreciation that the room, although not fancy, was clean.  Woven wool blankets covered the bed, and she laid her bags down onto the small cot.  The washstand in the corner suddenly reminded her of the dust layered onto her skin from the stage ride.  Pouring a stream of water into the bowl, she splashed her face and rolled up her sleeves to wash her hands and arms.

Glancing briefly into the small mirror hanging over the washstand, she saw that her long braid of black hair was still tidily knotted at the back of her head.

“Now what?” she asked herself, turning to face the room.

Everything suddenly seemed a bit unreal.  For so many years she had dreamed of coming to this town as a doctor.  It was the force which drove her through college, through medical school, which kept her fighting against all the prejudice a woman doctor received.  And now she was here...and suddenly felt unsure.

Suddenly she brushed her hands briskly across her skirt.  It was time to take action.  In her bag was a letter from a doctor back at the medical college.  Dr. Brenner had been a bit of a mentor to her – through college and after graduating.  The kindly, white-haired doctor had made no bones about thinking Ellen was crazy to think of coming out West for her first job.

Ellen's lips twitched in a wry smile as she remembered the look he'd given her over his glasses.  “Might as well try to stop a train as change your mind once it's made up,” he'd grumbled – and promptly started trying to help her.

It had seemed an answer to prayer when he'd received a letter from an old friend detailed how the doctor who had been living in Tumbleweed Flats had had to leave on an undecided leave of absence.  He would be happy to have a replacement suggested by Dr. Brenner...

“I suppose the logical step would be to get something to eat, instead of worrying about doctoring,”  Ellen told herself.  The practical idea sparked another smile.  Her intense, imaginative and idealist side permanently warred the hard-headed, practical and down-to-earth part of her nature, and once in a while, she could step back and see it.

She figured that the hotel probably served food but she wasn't sure of the quality or cost.  Vaguely, she remembered seeing a cafe when she was walking to the hotel.  Getting a late lunch would probably be a good place to start.

“It is not for us to decide in which time we were born. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Marie looked at the list that Jamie had handed her before she left with Chug to get some supplies from the back.

Two pounds of sugar
A bag of flour

and so the list went on. The lady smiling behind the counter helped Marie with her what she needed, and soon the things on the list were boughten. Jamie and Chug came in from around back, and after thanking the storekeepers, the three of them loaded the supplies in the chuckwagon.
"Do you two want a ride back to the hotel?" Chug asked.
Jamie looked at Marie before answering. "No, let's walk and stretch our legs. It's only a short walk."
Marie nodded, and Chug went off. As the two girls walked down the streets, they eagerly took in their new surroundings.

Ellen hurried down the steps of the hotel.

"The room all right, miss?" asked the desk clerk.

Ellen paused in the act of going out the door of the hotel.  "Yes, thanks," she said, smiling politely at the clerk.  She turned quickly to go out the door -- and suddenly, with a surprised gasp, collided sharply with two girls who were hurrying inside.

Staggering back, Ellen felt herself turning red.  "I'm sorry!" she exclaimed, holding out a hand to the younger girl who had fallen.  "I guess I wasn't looking.  I'm new here -- I'm so sorry!"

Marie fell to her knees, but the other girl helped her up.
"It's our fault," Marie said. "Don't worry about it!" She smiled.
"Still, I wasn't looking where I was going," the other girl said, reprimanding herself.
"Honestly, it's okay," Jamie said. "Oh yes, I'm Jamie Williams, this is my younger sister Marie."
