Thanks! :)
*nods* She did get better as it went along. I believe Love Comes Softly was her first novel ever, so that possibly could account for some of it. And I agree, I don't really think they talked quite like that, perhaps the poorer people didn't have such good grammar, but I'm sure that with schools and such, it wouldn't of been quite like she portrayed it as.

The slang in LCS really turned me off! It's so hard to read that. Her slang faded away as she became a better author, though, so it's just one of those live-and-learn things. We all go through it! (but most of us don't get published till we iron them out. ;) ) |

That's very true. Even if the actual writing style of the LCS series didn't improve greatly (it's been a while since I read it) I know that in her other work she changed for the better.
I'm currently almost finished Lorna Doone. It's been a good read with quite a few interesting points, especially the twists and turns. After that I'm not sure what I'll read, perhaps Silas Marner by George Eliot or start on my Wilkie Collins. Ah, the joy of have 10+ books awaiting you to read them.

| Wow! I've been wondering about reading that for a long time. Is it very good?
Is that the one set in Scotland? |

| It's good! :) I didn't enjoy it as much as other books, but once I got into it, I enjoyed it quite a bit. As far as I know it's set somewhere in Southern/Southwestern England?

Ah, Lori Wick. Now I know why it was familiar. *makes face* I didn't like "Cassidy" at all. And I agree one hundred percent...it just didn't 'feel' historical. I'm afraid that most historical fiction writers these days don't study their topics near enough to be able to write an educated book on the time period.
I've found that with my own writing my historical parts were incredibly more better after I'd learned SO MUCH about the period that I was comfortable with it like I'd be comfortable with my own time. It just came out naturally then. I didn't feel like I was having to force it to come out or having to really think it through and make it REALLY historically accurate because I was confident in my knowledge and what I knew. That might make no sense...but it was almost like... ah... Almost like I knew what I was talking about and I knew that--deep down in me. So I didn't have to 'prove' it or whatever...
That doesn't make much sense. Sorry. |

Currently I am reading Amazing Grace. It's the story of William Wilberforce and his fight to end slavery. It's a really good book.
After I finish that, I am going to read "don't waste your life" by John Piper or "The Bruised Reed" by Richard Sibbes |

It was rather confusing at the beginning for me too, but after a bit it picked up. So don't feel bad! :)
Lady Jayne: How is the Amazing Grace book going? It sounds really interesting! :)

| I'm almost finished with it. Some interesting facts are: He joined parliament at the age of 21; it took him around 20 years to abolish the British slave trade; he abolished slavery in the British colonies three days before his death in 1833. |

| Yes it was! I haven't read the book but I have seen the movie! It's really good!
I've been re-reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond. That is such a good book, I love the last part and then the part when it says "And love was Nat." Has anyone else read it? It will be such a good read if you haven't read it, in fact, I can't wait till I can read it to my children!!!! :)
Also, I'm really enjoying some Agatha Christie books. I liked the ones will Hercule like "Death on the Nile" or "Evil under the Sun" and I'm reading at the moment "The Labors of Hercules" which is about twelve mystery's in one book! I also read a book with a different mystery "detective" and that one is called The Mirror C'racked or something like that! By the way, there is a bit of language in them but not too much! ;) |
